Free childcare places for Wales

PARENTS in Wales look set to be winners no matter who ends up in the Senedd as the Welsh Conservatives became the latest party to make the offer.

Andrew RT Davies' party have promised to treble childcare from 10 hours a week to 30 if they are elected.

Plaid Cymru and Welsh Labour have both already made the offer, meaning the three largest parties in the Assembly have all made the offer.

Labour's offer would be for 48 weeks a year, while Plaid's would be 39 weeks, the equivalent of term time.

"It is currently very difficult for working parents to take advantage of just 10 hours of free childcare, especially as provision frequently has to spread over five days," said Shadow Education Minister Angela Burns.

"Welsh Conservatives will work towards trebling free childcare for working parents to help parents return to work so they can provide for their family and help deliver a stronger economy.

In England the UK government has promised to double free childcare for parents of three and four-year-olds from 15 to 30 hours a week, though the pledge has been delayed until next year.
